"Hannibal at the Gates" covers warfare during the Classical Age.  "Hannibal at the Gates" starts when the Greeks developed well trained phalanxes and ends when the Roman army transitioned from a very good militia to become a superb professional army under Marius.

"Hannibal at the Gates" characterizes unit type based upon their historical performance.  Each troop type has a unique set of abilities and characteristics that present the players with challenges faced by the historical commanders.  Characteristics include: Maneuverability, Temperament and a Protection rating.  Added to this are some unit specific abilities that gives each different troop type its own special "flavor."  "Hannibal at the Gates" recognizes fifteen different troop types.

The phalanx was a highly trained, well equipped professional heavy infantry formation.  On the other hand, the legion was a flexible, but powerful, medium infantry formation.  The battle line formation gives the phalanx power and durability.  The "Hannibal at the Gates" turn sequence allows the Roman player to exercise the flexibility needed to succeed with a legion. 

"Hannibal at the Gates" employs an easy to learn process.  At its most basic, players roll two dice.  If the modified result is seven, eight or nine, one hit is inflicted; ten or better, two hits are inflicted.  This is true whether shooting or engaging in hand to hand combat.  Of course, the modifiers are different for each endeavor.

While "Hannibal at the Gates" employs a seemingly simple system, it will take players a few tries to become proficient.  For example, the Roman Legion is employed most effectively when starting in their historical "triplex acies" or checkerboard formation.  This deployment allows individual Legionary units to dart in and out, throwing their pilum, fighting a single round of combat then falling back to do it again in the following turn.

Deployment of a phalanx in Battle Line formation and guiding it across clear terrain will bring its irresistible force to bear.  Using elephants and scythe chariots like a modern day pre-planned artillery barrage is likely to produce maximum damage to the enemy.  Leading cavalry units onto the enemy's flank may produce a series of cascading routs.  In these ways each different troop type has been crafted to closely reflect their historical counterpart.
